I find that most of my Suitors will reach for gold. Gold is unmatched when it comes to its ability to be resistant to chemical reactions and corrosion. It also commands an esteemed value. I can't help but notice the reactions amongst us. "Ew. Gold plated. Ew, it's *just* silver."
But are we being too judgmental on silver when it comes to fine jewelry? First, what is fine jewelry?
Definition of Fine Jewelry
Fine jewelry = is both the use of precious materials: metals and/or gemstones and the quality of the craftmanship. In other words, are these good materials and are they going to last awhile?!
What is Silver?
Silver can hold its own too! It can withstand wear and is easily moldable into works of art. Did you know that in the Victorian era, silver was considered more precious than platinum? Its shine is unparalleled. Fine silver is 99.9% silver, it is pretty soft so if you bring in items with fine silver make sure you handle it with great care. Sterling silver or 92.5% silver content is what is most commonly used.
Why is there so much snub on silver?
Here are my two theories:
1. Some businesses hide or make it deceptive on what type of gold it is. It causes a lot of mistrust for the consumer.
2. A lot of gold plated jewelry are mass produced. They are made with equipment. Sometimes the performance and aesthetic quality standards are sacrificed. costs are often cut.
I believe silver gets a bad rep because of its frequent use in costume jewelry. Both of the theories above are really rampant in fashion jewelry items today.
What to look for with silver and fine jewelry?
1. Look at the type of jewelry it is.- Rings and bracelets are the top types that go through significant wear. They should be more critically evaluated in build. For example, if the design is not continuous or if they are junctions – do they look nice and sealed? And yes, this is where I agree solid gold is likely its best use.
- Earrings, pendants, and brooches endure less in wear and tear. The build of the item is far relatively less critical.
- If the critical design components are handmade, it should withstand more than your flimsy bulk produced jewelry. And not all hand worked jewelry are the same. Artistry and expertise are all different.
I always circle back to the values of estate jewelry. Whether its antique or vintage, these jewelry items have lived a life before you. They already weathered through the test of time and the proof of its existence already showcases its quality construction.
