A graduated antique beaded coral necklace features colors that range between tropical peach and salmon. The beads exhibit subtle variations in hue, indicating their natural origin. It is assumed that coral is a living organism, but coral beads are formed from the secretions produced by the support structures of the formerly living coral. Due to environmental regulations and the near extinction of certain coral species, collection and the use of coral is now highly protected.
Dating back to the 1890s-1900s, references from the GIA note that during the Victorian era, coral beads were commonly believed to offer protection from evil spirits and bring good luck.
